It is now recognized by many experts that the traditional NERC GADS generator reliability rates and factors do not adequately reflect the complexity of today’s market condition. EAF, EUOR, EFORd and such do not accurately measure the localized demand variability embedded in the Locational Marginal Pricing of energy. Key questions about the profitability of being available and the economic losses of being unavailable are not answered. Commercial Availability (CA) is emerging to be a better indicator of Generator Reliability and Performance when economic impact is attached to them. This presentation will outline the relationship between the actual margin and lost margins when a generator experiences an outage or derate. By evaluating the heat curves, the incremental cost curves, the startup costs, and unit operating constraints against the hourly LMP or system Lambda tied to each specific unit, energy producers will be able to better determine the true economic impact of each unit outage or derate. With the advent of computing power and the availability of robust market data published by each ISO, detail hourly analysis can now be performed to bestow us insight into the complex relationship between economic dispatch target, actual generation, available capacity, energy and ancillary services revenues, generation costs, startup costs and no-load cost. Ultimately the CA percentage tells us how much total profit we would have made and how much lost opportunity dollars we left on the table due to inopportune outages and derates.
With this new insight, incentives become clearer when considering maintenance outages during lower priced periods in order to capture the maximum potential margin when the unit is dispatched during peak demand periods. Utilities should have the capability to determine how much margin the unit could have made by simulating a generation pattern if the event was avoided. The analysis of key drivers affecting plant profitability will aid in focusing efforts on having generators available to generate when profit potential is high.

Integ welcomes We Energies to our family of clients

1/10/2015

We Energies based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin serves more than 1.1 million electric customers in Wisconsin and Michigan's Upper Peninsula and more than 1 million natural gas customers in Wisconsin. The majority of We Energies' electricity is generated by its coal-fueled power plants power plants in Oak Creek, Pleasant Prairie and Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and Marquette, Michigan; from the natural-gas-fueled Port Washington Generating Station in Port Washington, Wisconsin, and from the Point Beach Nuclear Generating Station north of Manitowoc, Wisconsin (now owned and operated by NextEra Energy Resources). We Energies also operates natural-gas-fueled peaking plants, which are used to produce electricity during periods of peak demand, several hydroelectric dams located on rivers in northeast Wisconsin, and from various renewable energy sources, including wind and biomass. Integ to add carbon tracking in PowerGADS as federal regulations on emissions are proposed

6/2/2014

Integ is in the process of preparing PowerGADS to estimate carbon emissions as federal policies are predicted to increase in stringency in the near future. According to the EPA, the current adminsitraton is seeking to cut carbon emission from the power sector by 30 percent nationwide below 2005 levels with the implementation of its Clean Power Plan.

Calculations based on fuel characteristics and heat content will allow PowerGADS to estimate carbon emissions and other green house gases in addition to the ISO/NERC-GADS requirements currently in place. For pending legislation regarding alternative energy, PowerGADS also currently has a Wind Module available for clients who have or plan to add wind power into their generation portfolio.

Analysts at Integ will continue to proactively monitor regulatory changes and will swiftly update our software to assist our clients in meeting new business challenges as they arise.

Integ Enterprise Consulting releases a Real-Time and Continuously Updated Profit and Loss (P&L) application.

3/1/2014

As deregulation continues to spread throughout the nation, the utility industry in the United States is becoming more competitive. The changing business environment demands higher operational efficiency that requires effective and strategic decision making. Very often the right course of action taken by management depends largely on having access to precise and up-to-date information. It is for this reason that the need for a Real-Time and Continuously Updated Profit and Loss (P&L) system has become critical.

The key to producing timely and accurate Profit and Loss information is dependent on the system’s ability to gather:

  • Operating characteristics and cost components for each generating units
  • Day-Ahead and/or Real-Time bids sent to the market
  • LMP, clearing prices and market result from the ISO
  • Real-Time operating data from the Pi Historian system
  • Day-After meter readings
  • Settlement Reports from the ISO or settlement data from third-party systems
Integ’s PowerP&L is designed to deliver vital operational and financial information continuously from the day-ahead perspective to the final ISO-settlement perspective; therefore the interface data are collected as soon as they become available and are update continuously as the data quality improves.

PowerP&L provides the user a 5 minute and Hourly Graphical Dispatch View, Hourly Performance View, and Daily/MTD/YTD P&L View. Additionally a Metric Dashboard allows users to perform Ad-Hoc Reporting for any data item collected. A series of screen captions are displayed in subsequent sections to provide a sense of what the system can provid

Integ has successfully implemented the Margin Analyzer module into the NRG PowerGADS system

1/1/2014

NRG, a Fortune 500 company with 47,000 megawatts of capacity across multitudes of ISOs nationwide, is using Margin Analyzer to perform commercial availability analysis in terms of actual margins and lost opportunity margins.  The system helps NRG in gaining insight into lost margin per generator outage as well as lost margin per equipment component across the fleet. It is envisioned that the product will be further customized to provide additional benefits to the Risk Analysis group and Outage Planning group.

Integ prepares clients for the SPP Integrated Marketplace to go live in 2014

12/1/2013

The Integrated Marketplace program is the latest – but most complex – incremental step in SPP's approach to improving service to members and the region. The Integrated Marketplace will determine which generating units should run the next day for maximum cost-effectiveness, provide participants with greater access to reserve electricity, improve regional balancing of supply and demand, and facilitate the integration of renewable resources.

The Integrated Marketplace will include:

  • A Day-Ahead Market with Transmission Congestion Rights.
  • A Reliability Unit Commitment process.
  • A Real-Time Balancing Market (replacing the current Energy Imbalance Service Market).
  • The incorporation of price-based Operating Reserves procurement.
  • In addition, the current Balancing Authorities within the SPP footprint will combine to form a Consolidated Balancing Authority.
