The Integrated Marketplace program was initiated in 2007 with the goal of creating stronger grid reliability and greater cost savings through centralized unit commitment and efficiencies. Objectives for the development of this program included being able to determine which generating units should run the next day for maximum cost-effectiveness, while giving participants greater access to reserve electricity. Southwest Power Pool thus hopes to improve regional balancing of supply and demand, and facilitate the integration of renewable resources.
The Marketplace is scheduled to go live March 1, 2014, but participants are able to test data in the Structured Market trials beginning June 3, 2013.
